About Half The People Who Receive SNAP are Working At Minimum Wage Jobs. Isn't That True? [View all]
That was my understanding. That, of the 44 million Americans receiving food assistance, about 70% of them are working "minimum wage" jobs.
So, yeah...SNAP is indeed a WELFARE program. CORPORATE WELFARE! It's a perfect example of 'LEMON SOCIALISM.'
No, it's not for deadbeats who spend all day on the couch, smoking crack. It's for CORPORATE WELFARE deadbeats who get a full days work from their employees, but refuse to pay them enough to live. Or, hire multiple part-time employees to make sure none of them qualify for benefits. That's right. The American taxpayers are SUBSIDIZING the PROFITS of corporations that refuse to pay their workers a living wage.
If you ask me, that's the way Democrats should frame this issue. And they should make RAISING the MINIMUM WAGE one of the concessions required for re-opening the government. That's usually what you DO in a negotiation. Add more demands to your position, and maybe your opponents will have more incentive to settle.
Democrats should demand three conditions as a minimum for re-opening the govt.
1. Extend ACA healthcare funding
2. Raise the Minimum Wage to $18
3. Return tariff policy to Congress. (Technically, tariffs are still determined by Congress, but the GOP House has spinelessly turned that power over to their Dear Leader.)
And maybe they can spend all their negotiating time haggling over whether the new Minimum Wage will be $15 or $18.
