That was my understanding. That, of the 44 million Americans receiving food assistance, about 70% of them are working "minimum wage" jobs.
So, yeah...SNAP is indeed a WELFARE program. CORPORATE WELFARE! It's a perfect example of 'LEMON SOCIALISM.'
No, it's not for deadbeats who spend all day on the couch, smoking crack. It's for CORPORATE WELFARE deadbeats who get a full days work from their employees, but refuse to pay them enough to live. Or, hire multiple part-time employees to make sure none of them qualify for benefits. That's right. The American taxpayers are SUBSIDIZING the PROFITS of corporations that refuse to pay their workers a living wage.
If you ask me, that's the way Democrats should frame this issue. And they should make RAISING the MINIMUM WAGE one of the concessions required for re-opening the government. That's usually what you DO in a negotiation. Add more demands to your position, and maybe your opponents will have more incentive to settle.
Democrats should demand three conditions as a minimum for re-opening the govt.
1. Extend ACA healthcare funding
2. Raise the Minimum Wage to $18
3. Return tariff policy to Congress. (Technically, tariffs are still determined by Congress, but the GOP House has spinelessly turned that power over to their Dear Leader.)
And maybe they can spend all their negotiating time haggling over whether the new Minimum Wage will be $15 or $18.

(21,923 posts)that if an employer has multiple part time employees at the same location in the same position...(I'm lookin' at you Walmart)...those employees minimum wage should be $25, because then it's just obvious you are using part time status to keep them from benefits.

(12,232 posts)I would love every person who parrots the "get a job" propaganda to be sentenced to live on 66% of median income for five years (and that is generous, with at least 29% of workers earning less than that).
Workers are more productive than ever before, yet median income has been stagnant for the past 45 years.

I wish more people showed up at town halls with blow ups of graphs like this that tell the horrible tale of how policies have screwed the American worker. And I would also love to see constituents challenge their Rep and Senators to 1) tell the audience what 66% of median income in their district/state is -- something I think few will be able to do, 2) challenge them to commit to live solely on that amount for a year, 3) come back after that year and have a serious talk about whether it is "worker laziness" or the immoral, unsustainable economy we have built (and that we have a moral obligation to transform) that is the problem.

(12,232 posts)Overall, four in five (79%) SNAP households included either a child, an elderly individual, or a nonelderly individual with a disability. Of those not working, most are disabled, over 65, or caring for others.
Working participants: Nearly half of all Americans who rely on SNAP are working, often in low-paying jobs that do not provide enough income to live on.
In fiscal year (FY) 2023 data:
39% of SNAP participants were children.
20% were elderly (age 60+).
10% were nonelderly individuals with a disability.
7% were full-time caregivers.

(14,809 posts)My friend's cousin's brother sees her the first of every month. She and her friends. And gang members taking EBT cards from their grannies and turning it into money at the corner bodegas...and, and....illegal immigrants stealing Social Security numbers to get a couple thousand dollars a month in Benefits....and...
Dude, if you really knew someone is committing enough fraud on benefits they don't need, put on your big boy pants and turn them in., because they're probably committing even more fraud on local businesses and other vulnerable people.
