with everything they had and then some and that the effort would weaken Russia enough that the soft underbelly of the central Asian states would rebel against Moscow's heavy handed micromanageent of their affairs.

It looks like I was correct, both Uzbekiustan and Kazakhstan turning toward the west while Azerbaijan, a little late to the effort since they needed a small push. Only the rigid dictatorship of Turkmenista is loyal to Moscow. The rest are likely to want some of their stolen land returned to them.

IOW, things are likely to erupt as Russia continues to be weakened by the lunatic at the top
