Oregon lawmakers told to plan on a weeklong special session

Oregon lawmakers should prepare for a five-day special session later this month, not the one-day session Gov. Kate Brown requested, according to a schedule issued Thursday top Democrats.

The schedule released by Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek, both Democrats, assumes that Republicans will not agree to suspend procedural rules. That would be necessary in order for the lawmakers to move Brown's tax proposal through more quickly.

Brown called for the special session starting May 21 so the Legislature could vote on her plan to expand an existing tax break to owners of sole proprietorships with at least one part-time employee.

The change would make 12,000 tax filers eligible to save a combined $11 million a year on their taxes, legislative economists found.
