Kids in my suburban neighborhood walked everywhere. In those days (late '50s-early '60s) most families had only one car, and Dad drove it to work. So we walked to school or to the store or to play at the playground or skating rink. Since Mom didn't have the car during the day, I would be sent to the bakery four blocks away to buy a loaf of bread when I was about 8 or 9. All of our parents would have been in jail.
