U.S. Attorney: Birmingham Muslim community instrumental in stopping threat to kill president [View all]

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham's Muslim community was "instrumental" in helping thwart a threat to kill the President of the United States, the U.S. Attorney in Birmingham said today.

Ulugbek Kodirov, 22, pleaded guilty in a hearing before U.S. District Judge Abdul Kallon at the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse in downtown Birmingham.

After the hearing, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance also thanked the Muslim community in Birmingham, "which was instrumental in helping law enforcement shut down this threat."

The Birmingham Islamic Society issued a press release Friday evening expressing its appreciation to local governmental agencies "that have worked tirelessly over the past several months in thwarting an attempted attack on our nation's President."
