to disagree.
Vehicle emission systems were at peak effectiveness in the early 90's. In that era, we had catalyst systems and MFI that eliminated most pollutants. Since then, EGR and EVAP systems have grown out of control and are a plague for the consumer. That's not to even mention the 100+ sensors now required to monitor all of it and the dozens of other tech that has been implemented in an attempt to gain 0.01% extra efficiency. It's madness at this point.
All of the stuff added since then have been for minor, and I mean extremely minor gains and all at a massive cost. Not only cost in development and manufacturing, but they consume the vast majority of repair bills over the life of the vehicle, often sending otherwise mechanically serviceable vehicles to the scrap yard as they are no long worth fixing from a monetary viewpoint, or the mfg simply stopped making the parts.
The idea was taken way too far and it is the primary reason you now have to get 7 year loans to afford a new vehicle. The entire system needs to be revisited and brought back to a reasonable level. It is way out of control.
