Because there is an over supply of educated people, relative to what there was 30-40 years ago. Because computers do the work of 10 people. You don't need to add and subtract, one Excel guy does the work of 35 people. People are paid survival wages. Government is not helping you as much, unions have been defanged except the strong ones, and that impacts wages for all workers.

Plus we are supposed to buy the goodies at high prices. Everyone is a disaster or two from insolvency.

Living within your means to scrimp and save is no fun, but you need to get the capital to invest in your future, your rainy day fund.

Readily available cost of credit has raised the cost of big ticket items, from education to cars to homes to vacations. You don't question the price. You just want to know the payment. Consumers are lousy at estimating the true intrinsic value of anything.
