Sen. Elizabeth Warren: How Wall Street Took Over Your Vet

Jun 26, 2026

People love their pets.

Private equity smelled that love — and that money — and now vet bills are through the roof.

I have a bill to put a stop to this.

We have a shorkie and a bichon. Each goes to the vet 3-4 times a year. Each time, it’s at least $250. And they are on different schedules so each visit is for one dog!

And don’t get me started on the groomer! LOL

I love our dogs. I just don’t let my thoughts get around how much they cost! But, it’s a choice, right? When we put down a dog two years go, we could have scaled down. We didn’t. We were puppy shopping within days!

Gracie needed her allergy shot, and Kona had a respiratory infection. The total bill was $389. She's had the shot before, and I remember it being less than $50. This time it was $248 for the drug, and an additional $26 for being injected (and it was given by one of the techs!)

I was in shock! It is a large practice with several vets, and this guy is our favorite, but--good lord! Our local vet here is a one man show, but I don't like him. He doesn't like giant dogs, and actually mistreated one of our former girl Pyrs. But he is cheap!

after I was told that one of my regular vets no longer worked there. I asked what happened and was told they couldn't talk about legal matters - which made me super suspicious. I learned the practice had been bought by a private equity firm. I did a search for the vet and, lo and behold, he was starting his own practice! I delayed my cats annual visit till he opened and drove twice as far - and I think I was their first client! I did something I've never done before - I posted on my Facebook page promoting his practice. F*** private equity firms.
