once to run in joy of life appeasing to the savage
in shadows dappled deep smiles turned to frowns
dulling each claw’s knife yet they can still ravage
the old hearts beating slow tired eyes seek shade
dream of the past hunts twitching and trembling
inside a grumble sounds low as prey once played
as reality now confronts in the mirror resembling
the smell of blood haunts the echoing of screams
tightening the jaws grip the dragging dead weight
and a taste of meat taunts lap water from streams
tongues roll the last sip a hard blank mind of slate
a scent of sex lures riding far into the starry night
to where the mate is hiding not really out of sight
