BREMERTON, Wash. The Bremerton-based aircraft carrier USS Nimitz its strike group are being redirected to the Middle East from their current deployment in the Western Pacific, according to two U.S. officials.
The carrier was initially scheduled to make a port of call in Da Nang, Vietnam, June 20, but that stop has been canceled.
One of the officials said the Nimitz is being directed to proceed to the Middle East "without delay."
Officials told CNN the Nimitz group was already scheduled to replace the USS Carl Vinson in the Middle East prior to the order.
The redirection comes as tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, following Israel's strike on Iran's nuclear program last Friday, which prompted Iran to retaliate with a missile barrage targeting Israeli sites.
