'Very sad': People forced to surrender their pets due to government shutdown

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/owners-forced-to-surrender-their-pets-due-to-government-shutdown/4008666/

As the government shutdown continues and SNAP benefits are set to end, some pet owners are facing an impossible situation.

Amy Creel, the president of Knine Rescue in Montgomery County, told News4 that just on Wednesday, they received six or seven calls asking for help due to the government shutdown.

"If you are having to prioritize the basics, for some people, they're starting to look at their dog, and say 'I don't know if I can afford this,’” Creel said. “And they're devastated. They don't want to be in this situation. They don't want to surrender, but they're not sure what else to do."

Some people aren't necessarily at the point yet of surrendering their pets. Creel said she’s also been getting a lot of calls from people just asking if there's any extra food that can be donated.

Reese, a 2-year-old mixed breed, has been a part of the family since he was a puppy.

Unfortunately, the single mom of three kids said, with SNAP benefits set to be cut off in just a few days, she's had to make a difficult decision.

She said she spends "close to $400 a month [on the dog], give or take. And just can't manage that and put food on the table."

That means Reese will soon end up in a foster home.

were both over 18 years old and I never spent that kind of money on them. I would only give them flea treatment when I found a flea....which was easy because of their short light color hair and a flea comb and I would take them 2 x/s a year for a heart worm test. I think I save a lot of money doing it this way and it led to their long lives. (I also put natural pest control on them - like Skin So Soft from AVON

I watched the report last night. It was a big dog. Honestly, lady, if you are on SNAP and are spending $400 on feeding a dog, you have no business owning that dog. Especially in an apartment complex.

In the cat rescue that I volunteer with. Especially with lower-income, primarily Hispanic families. Surrenders or (more often) dumps. It's always around the beginning of a new month, when people are evicted. It's tragic.
