Inside Russia, Putin's War Just Turned Toxic - Jason Jay Smart
Putin built this war to keep pressure on Ukraine, but the systems sustaining Moscows offensive are now throwing costs back into Russia itself. Russian FAB glide bombs have repeatedly fallen on Russian or occupied territory, including 500 kg (1,100 lb) weapons designed to strike Ukraine from safer launch distances.
North Korean shells help preserve Russian artillery volume, yet quality problems can mean wide dispersion, duds, barrel damage, and risk to Russian crews. Geran-5 adds faster saturation pressure, with reported range near 1,000 km (621 mi), speed near 600 km/h (373 mph), and a 90 kg (198 lb) warhead. Budget reporting is also disappearing as the war bill becomes harder to measure.
Ukraine still pays the highest price, while Moscow keeps firepower high through rougher inputs, hidden costs, and exposed supply chains. Russias claimed quiet period still saw 150+ assaults, 100+ shelling incidents, and nearly 10,000 kamikaze-drone strikes over 2 days. Companies cutting personnel costs also rose from 12.4% to 25%, showing how war pressure is moving into ordinary workplaces.
