India to raise use of Green Hydrogen in aviation, refineries, fertilizers to comply with CBAM

India is planning to increase use of Green Hydrogen across sectors to
reduce carbon emissions, curb imports, and comply with the European Union's (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Launching India's Green Hydrogen certification portal at an event in New Delhi, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi urged the domestic industry to use more Green Hydrogen not just to reduce carbon emissions and comply with the CBAM, but also to ensure commercial viability.
Secretary with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Santosh Kumar Sarangi noted that domestic production of Green Hydrogen can save over 4.5 million tons of Hydrogen produced via imported LNG, as he pointed out that 2.2 million tons of Hydrogen is needed per year in refineries and 2.3 million tons of Hydrogen is needed per year in the fertilizers sector.
Highlighting that larger use of Green Hydrogen will help comply with EU's CBAM+ initiative, which includes aircraft fuel, he added that the ICAO has mandated for 5% eSAF blending in aviation, which Green Hydrogen can help achieve...more
