At Least Four Dead, Others Still MIssing After Flash Flooding In Northern WV - Up To 4" Of Rain In 30 Minutes
At least four people are dead and several others were still missing on Sunday in the northern panhandle area of West Virginia after heavy rains caused flash flooding and destroyed homes, roads and bridges, authorities said. Lou Vargo the director of the Wheeling-Ohio County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency said during a news conference about the destruction in the area that hed never seen anything like this. Authorities said the storm hit the city of Wheeling and parts of Ohio County, including the Triadelphia and Valley Grove areas.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey (R) issued a state of emergency in Ohio County on Sunday. The move, officials said, opens up the possibility of the National Guard being deployed to help with the extensive damage. Morrisey asked in his statement for the public to keep impacted communities in your prayers. He said he had ordered personnel and resources to mobilize and respond to any emergency.
The rainstorms began around 8 p.m. Saturday and hit Wheeling and Ohio County, which is roughly 50 miles west of Pittsburgh. Vargo said the National Weather Service reported that between 2 1/2 to 4 inches of rain fell in a 30-minute period in the impacted area.
Almost immediately we got calls of people being trapped, Vargo said. Authorities said some people were rescued from trees.
