President Donald Trump and Mexicos president could have their first face-to-face meeting early next week at the Group of Seven summit in Canada.
Leaders from across the globe will begin to arrive in Alberta, Canada, over the weekend for the 51st G7 summit. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her team will soon receive confirmation about whether she will meet with Trump at the event, but told reporters a meeting is likely.
Both presidents are attending the summit within the first year of their respective administrations, as Sheinbaum seeks to stave off tariff pressure from Trump, and Trump tries to curb fentanyl smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Tensions are on the rise, too, over Trumps deportation strategy. Sheinbaum has called on the Trump administration to respect due process in deportation cases, some of which involve Mexican citizens.
