ROCKWOOD, Pa. (WTAJ) — More details have been released about the fatal train crash that killed two women in Somerset County Thursday.

According to Cambria Corner Jeff Lees, Susan Spangler and Deloris Latshaw, a mother and daughter from Somerset, were driving through the railroad crossing at Bridge Street and Main Street in Rockwood.

After a westbound train passed through the intersection, Spangler proceeded to drive through the crossing while the signal lights were still active. That’s when an eastbound train came through, colliding with Spangler’s SUV.

Latshaw died on scene and Spangler died shortly after noon in the emergency room of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center from their injuries. Both deaths have been ruled accidental, according to Lees.

... railroad crossing should have automatic safety gates, not just lights. I remember when I was a kid, Mrs. Partridge, who lived in Ashley Falls, Massachusetts, was killed at a two-track RR crossing in that town that only had a light. It wouldn't have happened if there'd been a gate.
