AOC rallies against Cuomo 'gerontocracy'

NEW YORK — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ratcheted up the stakes in the New York City mayor’s race Saturday night during a rally for contender Zohran Mamdani, framing the contest as a referendum on the future of the Democratic Party nationally.

It is a choice, she said, between the “gerontocracy” represented by the 67-year-old former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the change represented by Mamdani, a 33-year-old assemblymember.

“When I say that this is not just about New York City, but that this is about the United States, I mean that literally because Andrew Cuomo has made clear that if he wins this race, he wants to run for president of the United States,” Ocasio-Cortez, who’s 35, said at Mamdani’s event in Manhattan.

Cuomo has not publicly said he would run in 2028, but he told POLITICO in May he intends to be a national figure as mayor, organizing Democrats across the country.

3. Cuomo has no chance for a presidential bid in '28. I mean come on...

a history of sexual harassment as NY governor just whites the rethug ads for a campaign against him. Poor thinking IMO, voters have long memories, especially if they're reminded constantly by campaign ads.

AOC has done a good job with Bernie on their anti-trump tour, but 67-years-old as a candidate is too young to be put out to pasture.

I can see it if we're talking about nearly 80-year-old trump as that was the reason 80-plus Biden was hounded out of office after his disastrous debate performance in '24, but she's jumping the gun as a 67-year-old is 20 plus years younger than those two.

4. I have problems with Cuomo, but

his age is not one of them. "Gerontocracy" is definitely a stretch.

but I don't think criticizing Cuomo's age isn't the thing to focus on. He's got a lot more important strikes against him.

I'm 82. Going on 83. I support A.O.C. and will vote for her if she ever runs for president. But I don't support her on this charge against Cuomo.
