I got to spend a few days in Lyon with an old friend. The market scene is ridiculous. Just around the corner from his house is a square that seems to have something every day. Mostly food. Then there is a main street that seems to have a market set up most days of the week, but on Tuesdays it must stretch a kilometer on both sides of the street. They sell everything. I would say that food is near 70%.

I also have to dig through the pictures I took over 6 days..... Glad it's not film.

Smaller villages usually have a half day.
The variety is amazing.

We were blessed with light fog a couple of times. That really can add to the atmosphere.

That's so great. Here down south, USA, the farmers market in the town I live in is Saturdays, only, from mid April to mid September. Thank you for posting the pictures and info.

(8,595 posts)European refrigerators are small and they can't store much in them, so shopping for food happens more often...almost daily. It's one of those Chicken or the Egg things. Do they shop everyday for produce because of the lack of storage or is the storage space small because they shop every day for produce? It's a mystery.

(21,028 posts)It gets me out into the world (milieu) and I can choose what suits my shifting tastes - rather than buying for a couple of weeks and bulk cooking.

(6,046 posts)Their markets were really bustling on a Saturday. THe regular ones were open during hte week.
MAny peopel had little or no refigeration. ou could buy live chicken to take home to have later in the week.
