My dad lived Brubek & Desmond. Paul was my dad's second favorite sax player. (Behind only Getz)
So, I heard a lot of Brubek when I was a kid.
Watching those shots of Dave reminded me that my favorite part of competition piano was playing the ensemble category. First, I'm 13-16 years old playing with dudes on college scholarship for music. Guys could play.
Second, with the excellent string bass player, I didn't have to worry about basslines and just play cool substitutions with my left hand. Very liberating.

but DH is from Chicago. He and a buddy took their prom dates to a nightclub early show (paid for 2 drinks each, but couldn't have them) and had a nice pre-dance dinner. They were practically the only guests in the place and would have understood if the musicians decided to skip this set.

They played and DH said it was really good - music isn't so much his thing, but they gave a full length, full effort show for this table of kids.

It was Dave Brubeck.
