After a recent foray to the bingo hall with friends, we were leaving the hall when one of the workers stopped me to wish me a happy new year. I was wearing my favorite purple coat with the floral appliques across the yolk and shoulders. She ran her hand down the sleeve and remarked that it looked just like her grandmother's favorite coat. Her grandmother had passed a number of years ago, and many of her things had been donated to a local charity thrift shop. I told her that particular shop was my favorite, and the coat had just been put on the rack when I spotted it and tried it on, and it's been my favorite ever since. She smiled and touched my sleeve again and said she was so glad to be reminded of the grandmother she still misses. I asked if she'd like a hug from grandma's coat, and she nodded yes. As you can imagine, we both teared up a bit. We wished each other a happy new year, and I went on my way happy to have been an unwitting messenger of some happy memories. Serendipity, sometimes it just makes you smile.
