Wait, So NJ is 'The Forbidden Zone'?

Stumbled across a map of the landscape where 'Planet of the Apes' (1968) takes place. Somehow I never thought of the landscape of that movie overlaid onto NYC even though it ends with him finding the Statue of Liberty.

It is a great twist ending but it makes no sense because Heston is going up the coast when he finds it. The statue is presently on an island in a harbor. Even if you bury the base and half the harbor in drifting sand you don't get 100+ foot high bluffs (of Point Dume / Northern Malibu) next to it.

If a big copper coated statue survived then why not some remnants of steel skyscrapers?

And if Ape City is built on the ruins of the IKEA in Elizabeth NJ then why don't the Apes have a bunch of Geborgen Morgens and Poängganurgenburgens??

This is almost as bad as when I found out that "The NeverEnding Story" in fact DOES END! And does so after only 94 minutes! No refunds.

growing up still in the cold war, i always filled in the time gap simply with little geopolitical change until some spark ignites world war 3 and boom, virtually all humanity wiped out, then apes are able to take over. i'm guessing that's a common take, and we're probably meant to think heston's take when he sees the statue.

but plenty of time between "now" and heston's return in the 27th century or whatever.

magats are already talking about returning the statue of liberty to france. maybe it's just a joke at this stage, but maybe they're serious. anyway, point is, a lot can happen before earth go boom, so maybe they dismantled and/or moved the statue at some point.

hell, the london bridge is now in arizona, and they filmed the planet of the apes in arizona... hey, maybe it's actually arizona, not new jersey!
