(875 posts)My favorite is the sound when a summer deluge hits a metal roof like the one on my parents' deck.
Add in the chorus of rain hitting the bayou the deck overhangs, and it's veritable symphony.
Simultaneously soothing and invigorating

(15,289 posts)... for these freight train sounds -- tornados!
I think the tornados sound more like a giant blowing into an empty jug.

(15,286 posts)The first that comes to mind is the wind through the pine trees. You can actually hear it almost like waves coming over the other ridges of the mountains as it builds towards you and then goes past you and goes through the trees it's a really amazing sound.
Second on the list would be thunderstorm and rain in the mountains that building sound as it comes towards you. And the rain is just glorious especially in july!
Last but not least is a sound that is not a sound. Falling snow. That beautiful hush that comes with a winter snowstorm..

(9,877 posts)But the best is - train whistles in the night - 4 miles away - I have no car traffic so that and coyotes are my main night sounds.
Some nights I just hear whistle after whistle as there are 3 roads the trains have to blow their whistles at. I sleep with my deck doors open (screens ) - no air conditioning so I can hear the night really well. Also, if my rooster hears a noise in the night, he will crow and then his crowing makes my distant neighbors roosters crow.
My dogs like to sleep on upstairs deck outside my bedroom. When the coyotes come, my dogs and the coyotes try to out howl each other. It gets really loud but I love it.
Lightning is also really exciting when you live at high altitudes.
So rain, train whistles, lightning, Roos crowing and coyotes howling- these are a few of my favorite things plus my super affectionate dogs and my long time boyfriend who occasionally visits.

(16,277 posts)a burbling mountain stream, raindrops falling on the tent; also, the sound of waves lapping on the boat's hull as they gently rock me to sleep.
Above all, the laughter of children, the sweetest hymn the universe will ever know.
