Project 2029: What Hungary Can Teach Us About Holding MAGA Accountable

Julie Roginsky

Hungary may have just given America a preview of 2029.

After Viktor Orbán’s defeat, the party did not simply end for his supporters — the panic began. Figures close to Orbán and his Fidesz machine have been scrambling to move assets abroad, with private jets taking off from Vienna and money reportedly flowing toward Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Australia, Singapore, Uruguay, and the United States.

Incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar accused Orbán-linked oligarchs of trying to shield “tens of billions of forints” from accountability before his government takes power. He urged prosecutors, police, and tax officials not to let “criminals” flee to countries where extradition would be unlikely. There it is: the sound of a kleptocracy losing power, with the grifters packing bags, moving money, calling lawyers, and looking for safe harbors.

If Democrats are smart, they will look at Hungary and understand exactly what should happen in the United States if MAGA loses power in 2028.
