Trump threatens Canada with 50% tariff on aircraft sold in US, expanding trade war

Source: Independent

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened Canada with a 50% tariff on any aircraft sold in the U.S., the latest salvo in his trade war with America’s northern neighbor as his feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney expands.

-snip-

In Trump’s latest threat, the Republican president said he was retaliating against Canada for refusing to certify jets from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.

Trump said the U.S., in return, would decertify all Canadian aircraft, including its Bombardier. “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump said in his post.

Next week, it will be time to build a 400 ft tall Trump statue in gold on the White House lawn.

He's circling down the drain faster and faster. The black hole of insanity.

There are several hundred in service flying scheduled service between regional airports and larger airline hubs. If Trump is really able to decertify all Canadian-built aircraft it will mean massive airline disruptions. Further, lots of Canadian built aircraft are involved in specialised missions like firefighting and a large number of Canadian-built helicopters are used by police and other emergency services in the U.S. finally, the US military operates a number of highly specialised variants of the CRJ and other aircraft types.

This is (another) insane thing to do and the basic issue is moth the Transport Canada won’t certify certain American aircraft types it’s that they will no longer act as a rubber stamp for the U.S. FAA in the wake of the 737 MAX certification debacle.
