Health Dept. to Freeze $10 Billion in Funding to 5 Democratic States
The funding pause could jeopardize child care and other programs that serve hundreds of thousands of households in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesman cited massive amounts of fraud as the reason for the freeze, but did not provide evidence of fraud in four of the states. Michael A. McCoy for The New York Times

The Trump administration plans to freeze $10 billion in funding for child care subsidies, social services and cash support for low-income families in five states controlled by Democrats, claiming widespread fraud throughout those states, without citing evidence, after a major welfare fraud scheme in one of them.
Minnesota, New York, California, Illinois and Colorado will be cut off from around $7 billion in funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which provides cash assistance to households with children, according to two people familiar with the matter. The five states will also lose access to nearly $2.4 billion for the Child Care Development Fund, which supports child care for working parents, and around $870 million for social services grants that mostly benefit children at risk, the people said.
The funding pause could jeopardize programs that serve hundreds of thousands of low-income households in the five states.
The planned freeze appears to build on the administrations pause last week in $185 million in annual aid to Minnesota day care centers after investigators said that more than a dozen welfare fraud schemes in that state had led to billions of dollars in taxpayer losses.

Regarding fraud in general? Well, Trump is an expert in fraud. The courts found him to be.

The Republican CABAL has been hammering us here in Colorado, not sending any "normal, pre-allocated" money to our state.
Along with other Blue States, that already send them far more money than we ever receive from the Fed Gov't.
There are a mass of Red states that send an incredible low amount to the Feds, and get far more than they send.....
That is esp true these past few decades.
The budgets for Colorado and Denver are in a real tail spin thanks to all of this.....

(68,975 posts)The United States is a big country and it's starting to look like we're irretrievably divided.
I understand that it's not really a red state/blue state divide. It's actually a rural/urban divide. Democrats in SC, AR, and WY are just as true blue as the ones in NY, CA, and VT.
But at some point people in states that consistently elect progressives are going to get tired of being bullied by the morons who keep getting elected in deep red states. Being a deep red state now means that the state's leaders don't believe in science, medicine, education, a postal service, a national weather service, or any other public goods. And those voters have an outsize influence on national elections. I have a lot of sympathy for people stuck there. I'm one myself, here in purple N.C. with a MAGAT state legislature pushing everyone around. But this can't go on. We have options.
California alone has one of the world's largest GDP. The digital age means we don't have to contiguous (Alaska and Hawaii aren't anyway).
Imagine a nation made up of CA, HI, WA, MN, MI, NY and the rest of the northeast, VA, NM, and CO - maybe more. That country would be a powerhouse. It would include leading research institutions, medical systems, and strong economies. And many of those states are refuges from climate change.
The economic disparity with the remaining states would be stark. This new blue nation's economic, health, education, and every quality of life indicator would far exceed even that of the current U.S.
I never thought I'd even consider this but I've simply had it with being ruled by morons who are dismantling civilization. Since they won't move to Russia, let them have their own country and sit in their own squalor and ignorance. I'm that angry.

(378 posts)I feel much as you do on this and I know others who feel the same. By the way, thank you for including New Mexico because we are often overlooked as a Blue state (actually some people don't think we are part of the US). Who knows what will really happen but we the people have to rise up in huge numbers. We have got to do something. I am both mad and scared and feel helpless. We're dealing with a treasonous and revengeful president (dictator) who is unfit mentally and medically. Then, he aligns himself with other dictators with the goal of changing the world order.
My Representative is Melanie Stansbury and she is terrific and does not sit on the sidelines. We are very proud of her.
Other states have senators and representatives who are putting themselves out there and at times, at a huge risk. Somehow something has to work

Trump cuts off $10B in funding to five blue states for child care, social services over fraud fears
By Josh Christenson

WASHINGTON The Trump administration is cutting off more than $10 billion in social services and child care funding meant for a handful of Democrat-led states over concerns that the benefits were fraudulently funneled to non-citizens, officials told The Post Monday.
The Department of Health and Human Services will freeze taxpayer funding from the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, and the Social Services Block Grant program.
