Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) has died at 65 years old, a top Republican confirmed Tuesday.
Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, confirmed LaMalfas death in a statement.
Doug was a principled conservative and a tireless advocate for the people of Northern California. He was never afraid to fight for rural communities, farmers, and working families. Doug brought grit, authenticity, and conviction to everything he did in public service, Hudson said. He represented the 1st Congressional District in Northern California and first joined Congress in 2013.
LaMalfas death leaves the House with 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats, meaning the House can afford no more than two Republican defections on any party line vote, assuming all members are present and voting.

Short article at post time.
This means that the GOP is now down to 218 (which is the bare majority), with Democrats to have a couple to come on board soon.

(165,753 posts)It was supposed to be 220 - 213 if she had stayed (and LaMalfa was still there), with (D)s having 2 vacancies (TX-18 & NJ-11) to make it 220 - 215.

Redding is as red as it gets.
As the name suggests.
DeSantis used the deaths of dems in florida to wait till the alst possible moment to hold a special.
Maybe Newsom can do the same.

Will have to see how Newsom handles this!

(45,990 posts)The election itself must be held between 126 and 140 days from the vacancy. So Newsom can set the date for sometime in June.

This is simply totalitarian-style (Nazi, Stalinist) re-writing of history into a flagrantly fictional narrative for propaganda purposes.
Earlier today, Doug LaMalfa died. LaMalfa was a GOP congressman who 100% supported all of this he claimed soon after January 6 that the circumstances surrounding this presidential election point to a fraudulent outcome, and he signed a brief supporting a lawsuit intended to get the SCOTUS to overturn the election.
In other words, this guy was an insurrectionist, straight up.

So, in conclusion, fuck LaMalfa. The world is better off without him.

Democratic Rep. John Garamendi (Calif.) said he would miss him as a friend and colleague.
Together for a decade, we represented the great Sacramento Valley, where I was proud to work with him on several bipartisan pieces of legislation in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to secure critical water infrastructure investments, advocate for California farmers, and safeguard the Sacramento River Watershed.

And yeah, LaMalfa signed on to legislation that directed tax money to help his rice farm, but he didn't give a shit about the rest of California and gleefully voted to cut Medicaid. "Tax money for me but not for thee"
