Only 5 percent of ChatGPT's 900 million weekly users pay, and reportedly most aren't worth much to advertisers
Source: The Decoder
Almost 90 percent of ChatGPT's roughly 900 million weekly users live outside the USA and Canada, according to The Information, citing data from tracking platform Sensor Tower. This creates a challenge for OpenAI's planned advertising business, since international users generate far less revenue. At Pinterest, for example, the average revenue per user in the USA is $7.64, compared to just 21 cents elsewhere.
India and Brazil rank among the largest ChatGPT markets alongside the USA, Japan, and France. Only about five percent of users pay for subscriptions. For emerging markets like India, OpenAI offers the cheaper "ChatGPT Go" plan at around $5 per month.

This is really bad news for a company as overvalued as OpenAI, and it means there will likely be much more pressure from OpenAI to leave taxpayers on the hook when (not if) the bubble bursrs.
I can't add to the info from The Decoder with much more info from The Information, unfortunately, because that Silicon Valley news source charges hundreds of dollars a year for a subscription, payable up front, no refunds if you cancel early.
But I can show you the graph at the top of that article from The Information, so you can see how bad ChatGPT looks compared to other platforms.

I don't feel like I use the format enough to justify even reading about what Plus would give me, but Alphabet has a way of eventually convincing a sufficient number of people that they need more Google cloud space, YouTube tv, and all other manner of their global footprint. It's as if corporations expect us to pay a monthly fee for nearly everything

(60,000 posts)customers pay $1,000/mo for a chatbot/AI that is somehow so convenient/necessary for them that they'll consider that cost worth it. Even the $200/mo tier at ChatGPT now is reportedly losing money for them because the computing cost of AI is so high and the $200/mo customers think they should be able to use that subscription a lot.
