Sir Keir Starmer has insisted he "stands" with Denmark after Donald Trump dramatically threatened to annex Greenland.
The prime minister also said that his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen was "right" to refuse the US president any claim to the territory.
It comes in the wake of President Trump repeating his territorial claims over Greenland following his decision to capture Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro.
Sir Keir's signal of solidarity with Nato ally Denmark comes as the US president suggested over the weekend that Venezuela may not be the last country subject to American intervention, after his administration struck Caracas. He has also previously made territorial claims against another Nato ally, Canada.

(204 posts)There once was a fellow named Keir,
Who said, Denmarks allyships clear:
If Trump wants to take
What he simply cant stake,
Hell find us not wavering here.
Said Mette, ice-cool in her stance,
Greenland is not up for a dance.
No flags will be swapped,
No maps will be chopped
Your empire can jog on, not advance.
But Trump, with a conquerors grin,
Kept penciling borders in pen:
If I want it, its mine
Thats the end of the line,
Said the voice in his head now and then.
Fresh off a strong-armed Caracas display,
He hinted, This wont be my last play.
When might makes the rule,
And threats are the tool,
The globe gets a bit less okay.
From Canadas north to Greenlands ice,
His shopping list wasnt concise:
Nato looked on,
Alarm bells rang strong
Allies, it turns out, have a price.
So Starmer drew lines Trump wont heed,
With words doing what tanks shouldnt need:
When bullies annex
With ego and checks,
The rest have to standand indeed.

Chump knows our strengths, he doesn't care about our weaknesses.
NATO knows and will exploit that. First step? Get your American bases out of our country NOW!
Close the airspace. Tankers are easier targets.
Chumps next move starts a war.
Putin thinks he is invincible also.
How's that working out?
"Do you want to play a game?"

Consequences have to start sometime and just because we all see nothing much but impotence everywhere doesn't mean our former friends should just throw up their hands, give up and turn away.

PUNISH the billionaires and corporations funding Trump.

"If Donald Trump does move against Greenland, or against Denmark, is that a different matter? Will the UK government condemn that?"
[waffle, waffle "both sides" blah] We're not going to give a running commentary ... When it comes to Denmark, Greenland and the United States, these are both NATO members, and I'm really proud that NATO has used discussion over division to ensure that these problems are in the past ..."
"Can you just say that Donald Trump should not do the same in Greenland?"
"What I can say, really clearly, is that I can't see this being any different to previous conversations that need to be had between NATO members ..."
"... I find it extraordinary that you can't just say, flat out, that Donald Trump needs to not intervene on Greenland ..."
"... the Venezuelan issue is clearly different from the Greenland issue, but that's for them to have those discussions ...
"So you don't have an opinion on whether or not Donald Trump should go into Greenland?"
"Well, look, this isn't for me to sit here and talk about hypotheticals which could go on forever..."
"The Danish Prime Minister is talking about this, she's asked the US to step - this is not a hypothetical"
And that was followed the most un-self-aware, laughable thing I've heard:
"And that's why it's important that allies stand firm"
"Firm"? How dare this jellyfish in ministerial form talk about anyone being "firm".
