Donald Trump has thrown a wrench into Marco Rubios course correction on Venezuela by insisting the U.S. is in charge of the country just hours after his secretary of state walked back that claim.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, Trump once again implied that the U.S. will be running the South American country after the administration captured its leader, Nicolás Maduro, and charged him in New York with drug trafficking and narco-terrorism offenses.
Dont ask me whos in charge, because Ill give you an answer, and itll be very controversial, Trump said, before immediately adding: Were in charge.
Trump had already floated the idea during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Saturday, saying the U.S. would run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition. Rubio, the presidents top diplomat, then sought to distance the administration from the suggestion that the U.S. intends to exercise outright control over Venezuela rather than its newly appointed acting leader, Delcy Rodríguez, who served as vice president under Maduro.

(42,473 posts)how much damage he's doing to himself with this kind of declaration. Rubio does, which is why he mitigated it.
Furthermore, trump is revealing how much of his motivation is due to his megalomania. Remember what he said to The Atlantic, which became the title of an article? "I run the country and the world."

(3,997 posts)And ask him who is we? Maybe Trump is one of those people who cant refer to himself in the first person; illeism is the term I think.
Would be simple to figure out whos actually in charge, but that would mean reporters having to actually go there and report what they see. Its much more comfortable sitting in AF1 and placating a dementia patient I guess.

(7,194 posts)Trump's is "We're in charge of Venezuela."
I don't know why people are pretending that these are different messages.

(441 posts)He probably thinks our generals and oil executives are talking to the government and oil industry managers in Venezuela. He probably hasn't even bothered to have a discussion with little Marco. Probably hasn't talked with him much the past year at all. He thinks that the world is as it exists in his dementia ravaged mind.
