Sen. Chris Murphy: Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio 'Literally Lied To Our Face' Before Venezuela Takeover

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) condemned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for not being straight with the American people about President Donald Trumps attack on Venezuela, and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Appearing Sunday on CNNs State of the Union, Murphy was asked about a briefing that Hegseth and Rubio held last month with senators about Venezuela.
I can certainly tell you that the message that they sent was that this wasnt about regime change. When they came to Congress and they literally lied to our face they said, This is just a counternarcotics operation. This is about trying to interrupt the drug flow to the United States, Murphy said. Right around that same time, the White House Chief of Staff [Susie Wiles] said publicly if we ever had boots on the ground in Venezuela, of course, we would have to come to Congress.
Murphy then declared that the Trump administration was simply untrustworthy. They arent being straight with the American people, Murphy said. There isnt even a briefing scheduled for Congress next week to explain A) what happened, and B) what the plan is moving forward. But yes, I think everybody in that briefing heard the administration say, This is just a targeted counternarcotics operation. This has nothing to do with regime change.

(15,363 posts)Murphy needs to work with his colleagues across the aisle to ensure that Congress does its duty in holding the president accountable for this high crime.
Surely Republicans take seriously their sworn oath to uphold the United States Constitution, and to stop this presidential usurpation of Congressional power in matters of war.

He's already been impeached TWICE and wears that as a badge of honor.

(15,363 posts)Nevertheless, impeachment IS the required course of action. It's a G-damned crying shame and an existential threat to the survival of our Constitutional democracy that one of America's two major political parties, along with a complicit Supreme Court, is actively destroying what our nation's Founders created and so many true patriots fought and died for.

(165,753 posts)VOTE to remove EVERY Republican that they can, OUT OF OFFICE - whether municipal, county, state or national.
By taking back our state governments or bolstering those that we have a majority in (including the state judiciaries), we can build a firewall to 45 for the next couple years.

We need more voters to see the Republican Party as a pariah in the eyes of those who value the highest ideals of our Constitutional democracy.
