Move to unseat Mike Lee gains steam after Utah senator's tweets mock Minnesota political shootings

The movement to unseat Republican Representative Mike Lee of Utah is gaining traction as he faces backlash for his posts about the shootings of two Minnesota politicians last week.
Last week, Democratic state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in their Minnesota home. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot in their home, but survived. Two days later, officials arrested and charged Vance Boelter with two counts of second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings.
After the shootings, Lee wrote on X: This is what happens when Marxists dont get their way. In another post, he posted a photo of Boelter with the caption Nightmare on Waltz Street. The caption appeared to be a reference to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat. Lee has since deleted the posts. Now, federal and state lawmakers alike are slamming Lee for sharing the posts in the wake of the deadly shooting.
Utah State Senator Nate Blouin, a Democrat, told The Bulwark hes getting messages from constituents asking him to hold Lee accountable. Fellow Democratic lawmakers in Utah say theyve been similarly flooded with emails from constituents who want to donate to support efforts to unseat Lee, according to The Bulwark.

(541 posts)...dominated by a sick white-supremacist polygamist fucking made-up (but aren't they all?) religious cult that reveres predatory vulture capitalists like "Dancing Horse" Mitt Romney (who would literally poison children for money) will do the right thing. On the up-side, they do have a great sounding chorus.
Plus, they will get their own planet when they die. How fucking cool is that!
Itah, Theytah, Wetah,...Utah.

In October of 2020, he wrote this:
Democracy isnt the objective; liberty, peace, and prospefity [sic] are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy* can thwart that."
Lee just said the quiet part out loud; but every Republican believes that, to one degree or another, or they wouldn't be Republicans. Though they might phrase it a bit more delicately, there can be no question that the GOP has always hated the very concept of democracy. Why do you think Republicans applauded the German American Bund when they filled Madison Square Garden to overflowing in 1939 in celebration of Hitler and the Nazi Party? BTW, Charles Lindbergh was the keynote speaker that night. He should be nobody's hero.
It was also Republicans that tried to organize a coup against FDR in '33, but mistakenly tried to recruit Marine General Smedley Butler (ret.) to organize the wetwork. Instead, he dropped a dime on 'em, and exposed the plot in a Congressional hearing. Congress, of course, did nothing. Dubya's Grandpappy, Prescott Bush, was reportedly one of the conspirators, though the whole thing was covered up, and flushed down the memory hole.
It would take more time than I've got on this Earth to compile a comprehensive list of Republican treachery against democracy in America, but vast troves of documentation are out there, and not that hard to find.

(19,952 posts)For one who professes to be a devout Mormon, I know Mormons who would not behave as he does, or say the things he has said about others who disagree with him.
After watching the Netflix historical drama series, AMERICAN PRIMEVAL, the first Mormons to the Utah territory were not very nice people or overly Christian as led by Brigham Young.
The efforts to have Mike Lee expelled from the US Senate is wise. Keep the heat on those Republicans who are supporting him also.

(13,645 posts)Theoretically, the Senate could expel him but it would take a two-thirds vote. That is not going to happen. And yes, he could be defeated when he comes up for reelection, but I don't think that is what the article is getting at.

State Sen. Nate Blouin, a Democrat, told The Bulwark he started to get emails and calls from his constituents across the political spectrum asking for him to take action to hold Lee accountable. Other Utah Democratic leaders said they were flooded with emails from voters asking where they should donate money to support efforts to unseat Lee, who is not up for re-election until 2028. The Deseret News, the nearly 200-year-old paper owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, published an editorial accusing Lee of casting Utah in a poor light and said that the posts revealed a lack of compassion.
What, in theory, could be done to hold Lee accountable for his posts is far from clear, and not just because the senator subsequently deleted some of the offending ones following his conversation with Klobuchar. Utah is a solidly Republican state, even if it is prone to electing Republicans of a less-than-pure MAGA stripe.
Blouin wasnt even considering the idea that a Democrat could mount a serious challenge to Lee. Though he didnt rule out that such a threat could materialize, he imagined it would have to come from someone not associated with his party. Were not going to win with a Democrat right now in Utah at a statewide level. It is not going to happen. I love the optimism, but it is not a reality, said Blouin, adding that he would support rallying behind an independent to take on Lee in 2028. Weve got a lot of work to do on the ground level to convince people that Democrats arent, you know, demons and eating babies trying to make everyone have an abortion.
But that doesnt mean that Lee, who was first elected to the Senate in 2010, is invulnerable or that he hasnt hurt his standing back home. He has abandoned the more mild-mannered approach to politics that defined his early career (including when he opposed Donald Trumps nomination in 2016 and refused to vote for him in the general election). And his embrace of MAGA and right-wing rhetoric has provided Democrats with opportunities to frame him as gripped by online conspiracism.

(157,291 posts)I did find this where Romney apparently wrote a book and indicated why he didn't endorse Lee in 2022 - https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2023/10/20/mitt-romney-shunned-mike-lee-2022/
So I expect they don't get along!
