Half-mile drug-smuggling tunnel connecting Tijuana to San Diego shut down by Border Patrol

Source: Los Angeles Times

Border Patrol agents shut down the construction of a 2,918-foot-long tunnel connecting Tijuana and San Diego with the aid of Department of Homeland Security officials and Mexican authorities.

At a depth of about 50 feet, a roughly half-mile-long tunnel connecting a home inside the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood with a commercial warehouse across the border in San Diego County has been uncovered by federal authorities.

U.S. and Mexican authorities say they believe the passage was dug to transport large-scale contraband.

The tunnel measured 42 inches in height, 28 inches in width and was equipped with electrical wiring, lighting, ventilation systems and a track system, according to authorities.

Some 'towers' (tall metal posts really) have been installed with cameras near here in recent years. And the nearby US Army Fort has had extra people sent in (with heavy vehicles) to help BP patrol.

But the pols looking for photo ops and talking points for campaigns like 'solutions' that are flashy, even tho they aren't effective. Really, the GOP pols don't seem to actually be interested in solving the problems.

As an aside, a gun shop in Cochise County was busted for using 'straw buyers' to get around bans on selling guns to people with criminal convictions, AND selling to gun runners who get weapons to the cartels just over the border. Guns and ammo going south from the US is a problem. Drugs coming north is a problem. Both problems are due to Americans behaving badly, NOT asylum seekers.

In our area, locals on the south side of the wall have used it for a canvas. Lots of vibrant colorful paintings on it. We also have a cross-border musical event about every year. Families and friends gather on both sides, hold hands between the bollards, pass tasty treats, sing, dance.... Sometimes people show how easy it is to get thru the wall with a Saws-All, or over the wall with ladders (once someone showed an SUV could conquer the wall with help of some easy to bring ramps)

Decades ago, not far from where I live, officials discovered a tunnel big enough to drive small trucks thru. Officials have always known walls don't work, but they do cause the deaths of wildlife by cutting off traditional routes to water, grazing, and ways for predators to just follow their prey.

Walls? Boondoggles and marketing ploy/diversion for the party that never has any real solutions to our problems.

What a wonderful to redirect attention. The cartel was probably finished using this tunnel and sent word to their Border Patrol puppets that they could have it...
