President Trump called on Iranian civilians to "immediately evacuate Tehran" on Monday evening, providing no additional details about what was coming.

Why it matters: It's not immediately clear what triggered Trump's dramatic post on Truth Social. Israel has been conducting strikes in Tehran since Thursday night, but the U.S. has so far declined to join the operation.

What he is saying: "Iran should have signed the "deal" I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!" Trump wrote.

37. Triggering an evacuation of a city is a tactic to further destabilize

An already destabilized government. Particularly when it's a capital. It clogs the roads which makes defensive maneuvers difficult. It depletes food and fuel in the city. And it pulls soldiers and government officials away when they decide its more important to try to save their families vs trying to defend a government already beginning to crack and crumble. This adds additional paralysis to government and military functions as people along the chains of command go missing or are unable to reach command centers due to the roads being jammed with panicked civilians and abandoned vehicles.

Thats said, there is zero fucking chance he knows this. He's likely just repeating what someone else told him to say.

It's also one of the top 25 most populated cities. Where are they expecting people to go? If you saw what happened to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, that was a very complicated thing. Keep in mind this comparison: As of 2024, the metropolitan New Orleans has just under a million people. Tehran's metropolitan area is 18 times that much. Are they expecting that somehow they can just evacuate 17.67 million people?

Also, the US and a lot of people seem to forget why Iran became what it is, and a big reason for that is the US government. The US government overthrew Mohammad Mossadegh because it refused to cave to western demands in regards to oil. We seem to forget that. It's really one of the big what ifs. What if the US never overthrew Mossadegh? Also, keep in mind, he was dealing with Fada'iyan-e Islam, which as you might guess, is an Islamic fundamentalist group, and one of Ayatollah Khomeini's main supporting groups. So the US is not innocent in regards to how Iran became what it is.
