Gov. Walz, Rep. Omar among dozens of Minnesota Democrats on gunman's list: Sources

Dozens of Minnesota Democrats were on a target list written by the gunman who allegedly shot and killed a state representative and shot and wounded a state senator in a targeted act of violence early Saturday, according to law enforcement sources.

The Minnesota Democrats on the list included Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and state Attorney General Keith Ellison, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the matter.

Police said the list -- which was retrieved from the suspect’s vehicle -- also named the victims in Saturday's shooting: State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman. Both victims are Democrats and Hortman was formerly the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Law enforcement officials are looking into whether the suspect may have been motivated by extreme views on abortion, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. Security resources have been dispatched to protect those people named on the list, authorities said. The Capitol Police said it's "working with our federal, state and local partners."

5. What did authorities say this morning ...

It was not clear to me how they got to the location of the first shooting. One of the victims called it in, or one of the neighbors? Then one of the first LEO's realized who the victims were and quickly decided to have the nearby home of the former House Speaker checked ... and that's where they encountered the suspect and interrupted his escape by vehicle and supposed plan for further shootings. But they mentioned "persons of interest", and now they've got a long list of potential targets. Did this crank have a network, was it an extended conspiracy? If they hadn't encountered him when they did how many more victims would there be?

This is gonna ripple. Anyone who opposes them had best tighten up their security.

The police were responding to a call, it doesn't say who.

At about 2am local time, police received a call in Champlin, a suburb of Minneapolis, that Hoffman and his wife had been shot, Evans said. Police in Champlin responded to that location, and police in a nearby suburb, Brooklyn Park, assisted.

Police in Brooklyn Park went to Hortman’s house at about 3.30am to check on her, given the nearby shooting of Hoffman. Upon arrival at Hortman’s house, officers saw a supposed police vehicle in the driveway with emergency lights on and what appeared to be an officer coming out of the house, Bruley said. The gunman, impersonating an officer, immediately fired at them, and then was able to escape out the back of the house, Bruley said.
