I saw this headline at the grocery store and hoped it was a mistake:
Union Pacific displays Trump-themed locomotive at College World Series *
Nope. Union Pacific actually did this.
Union Pacific revealed new locomotives that honor the United States 250th anniversary this year.
...
The second and newest commemorative locomotive is No. 4547 to celebrate President Donald Trump. 4547 alludes to Trump serving as the 45th and 47th president of the United States. Design plans for the locomotive feature two flags one that will feature the current U.S. flag with its 50 stars and one that features 13 stars for the original colonies.
Donald J. Trump" will be printed in golden-colored lettering next to Union Pacifics logo.
The rail company unveiled the plans as it prepares to merge with Norfolk Southern. It announced in July plans to acquire the Georgia-based rail company for $85 billion. The merger is still on a long road to approval, but if given the green light, it would create the first single-line transcontinental railroad, linking the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
The
potential merger has raised alarm for several groups who warn that safety guardrails could be jeopardized as the company grows. The American Farm Bureau is opposing the deal, saying members are concerned about reliability issues, accountability and market access for farmers. The Nebraska Legislature, despite trying to fill a budget gap, has introduced legislation this session that would give considerable tax credits to the company as it lurches toward the Norfolk Southern merger.
The new locomotives arent the only recent tokens of admiration for the Trump administration.
Union Pacific in October made a private donation to the White House to help construct a lavish $300 million ballroom.
