But I think you may be thinking of their voices and someone in your life you didn't like had that same voice?

Agreed, Phyllis Diller was sorta like a less crude version of Andrew Dice Clay. But she was not as particularly injurious or offencive to minorities in her audience as the backbone of her stage act.
Her stage personna was a manic, disheveled, loud mouthed, boisterous, sort of drunken house wife. Mostly her poison dart humor was aimed at herself and her husband - stage named "Fang" - who were the recipients of her self depreciation form of humor that was her signature thing.
