As Ron Filipkowski put he certainly was afraid of Vietnam style combat.
It would be funny if it weren't so INSANE! Of course he's not afraid of Vietnam syle combat NOW because it's someone else doing the fighting!
And get ready folks, just because it is insane, hypocritical and the opposite of what he promised the American people doesn't mean it can't happen.

(5,133 posts)He will go all in because the alternative is to admit that he was wrong - and he has not the character to do that.
I hope that I am wrong, but also what he says is right. He is not afraid of Vietnam style combat cause he aint gonna go.
He knows his fat, useless ass wont be fighting and dying in the conflict HE created.
Same as it ever was for this entitled nepo-baby.
Enshittify everything and let others figure it out and suffer the consequences of his stupidity.

I feel so bad for ALL the REAL men and women who actually DID enlist, train, and ship out to Vietnam to fight for our country. That includes all of those who lost their lives over there, as well as all of those who came home crippled for life, either physically or mentally or emotionally.
And this yellow-haired candy-ass who never got his hands dirty (and never had to) has the gall to sashay around talking about what a brave soldier he was, with his personal Vietnam story.
Personal Vomit Is more like it.

(19,236 posts)He is incapable of admitting he listened to a pair of handpicked arrogant incompetent fools (Kushner and Witkoff) instead of an enormous body of experts who have spent their entire lives studying the political and military history of the region.
He is incapable of admitting that he does not know what to do to get out of this, just like he did not know what he was doing when he started this.
Because he cannot admit these things -- even to himself, never mind the public -- to protect his pathetically weak ego, he will double down and escalate. As is his pattern, as is consistent with being the fragile bullying bullshitter that he always has been.

(9,012 posts)That's just the dead, there were a lot more wounded, and even more who were psychologically damaged.
And in the end we had to beat a hasty retreat.
This is what Trump isn't afraid of. After all, he's not going to get hurt, and he's won't be running for reelection, regardless of what he says. He also doesn't care what happens to the republican party, as long as he's able to gather up all those billions of dollars being a corrupt president is making available to him.
The future of the nation isn't important to him since he'll be dead; the mess he leaves here is of no concern to him.
The only things that would bother him are seeing all the buildings and other things that he put his name on having his name removed. The same goes for that idiotic ballroom he's building being torn down.
Most of all he'd hate to see all the people whose historical accomplishments he buried being lifted back up where they belong, and once again set above him.
In other words he sees the world through the eyes of an insecure narcissist, who needs constant reassurance as to his greatness. Losing all those false acknowledgements of his worth would be the worst thing that could happen to him.
And that's what he fears.

After Trump went over to congratulate the captain for his performance, the then-president asked Milley, who as JCS chairman served as Trump's principal military adviser, within earshot of others, "Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded." He also told Milley to never let Avila make a public appearance again

(18,563 posts)The maximum age for joining any branch of the military is 42. At 48, Jr is several years too old, but Eric is exactly 42, so he could still qualify, at least until his next birthday. Barron is the right age, but he's probably too tall (the maximum height allowed is 6'8" and he is 6'9" by most available estimates).
Disappointing, isn't it?

(4,086 posts)He and just about everyone else seems to think the US can gather, equip, brief, transfer and deploy our troops in a matter of hours or days.
Sorry, but this takes many weeks or months. In the interim time, the economics of the current situation will probably deteriorate to desperation levels rushing this operation along at an even faster pace. And rushing anything that will be this complicated isnt going to go well especially if Russia, China and India provide support.
I hope TACO materializes before something stupid is done. And I also hope when this is finally over theres a thorough airing of laundry and those responsible earn a trip to The Hague; Ill gladly contribute to their defense but its time for some accountability at all levels.

(53,137 posts)The three divisions of XVIII Airborne Corps that have no heavy equipment - the 82d Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) all have a mission to deploy one BCT 18 hours from initial alert to wheels-up.
(Disclosure: my first unit after graduating from Advanced Individual Training was the 101st Airborne, and my last unit before leaving the Army was 10th Mountain.)
What we DO NOT have is enough airlift to put all three units into Iran at the same time. We have enough to put one of them in, so IN THEORY what we'd do is send in 5th Special Forces Group to turn two miles of straight road into a forward airfield, probably insert the Division Ready Brigade (DRB) of the 82d by parachute, send the C-17s used to insert the 82d to Fort Campbell, airlift the DRB of the 101st into Iran, then send them to Fort Drum to pick up the 10th Mountain's DRB.
Unfortunately for Trump, the Iranians have air defense systems that are good enough to shoot down a C-17. They also have enough missiles to foil any attempt at taking Iran by air, and the number of the commander of Russian Air Defense Forces on speed dial when they need more missiles.
"But what about landing in a friendly nation and invading over land?" That's another place Iran has an advantage. Iran is surrounded by seven nations: Iraq, Türkiye, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Türkiye has a mercurial relationship with the US (and is too damn far from anything Trump would actually want in Iran, like the oilfields and Tehran, for ground troops to get there before the Iranians found them and fucked their shit up), four of them despise us and two are still pissed about those goddamned illegal wars Bush the Younger started against them in the Oughts. It's obvious, at least to me, that Trump is stupid enough to name the Iran War "Operation Iran Liberation" because that's what he really wants - not Iran's liberation, but what the initials of that phrase spell out. Trump doesn't care what kind of a dictator Iran has so long as the dictator will hand Trump their oilfields and the Kharg Island Oil Terminal so he can get the oil back to the US.
We have three choices here and none of them are that great.
Choice 1 is to try an aerial insertion and get (1) thousands of troops and (2) our entire C-17 fleet - a fleet we can't replace since the company that made those fantastic aircraft destroyed the tooling to do it as soon as the ones they made were complete - destroyed.
Choice 2 is to try a waterborne insertion. The Marine Corps trains extensively on amphibious invasion, but the Army COULD do it if they had to. Remember that the largest amphibious operation in the history of warfare - the Normandy invasion - was an Army operation. Unfortunately, the Iranians have A LOT of field artillery. Once again, say goodbye to a very large part of our military.
Choice 3 is to get rid of the Trump Administration in its entirety and hope the asshole who replaces our current asshole is a bit less bloodthirsty. I recommend boiling them in used motor oil because new motor oil is too precious to squander on this, but the Eighth Amendment has something to say about that.

(4,086 posts)But I'd say send this lot to The Hague and let them explain and defend their actions. That would be my dream but we have too many yahoos who think submitting to an international court would set too much precedent. I say, if you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear.

(114,568 posts)because the country is being headed by a military obsessed with martyrdom and who will take the entire country with them if they can, while Vietnam was mostly an anticolonial war in which the VC wanted to survive but without European colonists as their owners and masters.
The best outcome right now is if Congress forces an end to the conflict, removing the prospect of maryrdom at the hends of the west from the fanatics and leaving the vast majority of Iranians starting to ask some very, very hard questions (something most of them have a head start on, their government growing more unpopular by the minute).
This is why any invasion of Iran is a really, really bad idea and always has been.

(868 posts)We will probably take out a lot of their armor but they will have some left that they will use strategically when they have an advantage such as taking out a hard point in a defensive position or for a martyr team to use as an armored car bomb to blast through heavily reinforced buildings and perimeter walls the way ISIS did in Iraq. They most likely will not engage our armor in tank on tank warfare.
And they will also have sleeper cells committing terror attacks all over the world.
