General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI believe the DHS shutdown is becoming a political liability for us.
The long lines are continuing at the airports. The TSA agents are working without pay. Air traffic controllers are becoming overstressed.
The largest block of voters are not Democrats or Republicans. They are independents. Many of them don't trust either party to make a difference in their lives. Shutdowns don't help change that; they reinforce the distrust. There is only so much a party can accomplish when it is out of power. If our goal is to make a difference in people's lives, then we need to think strategically about the future to win elections. In 28, if we can capture all three facets of control, that is when we will have the power to make the bold changes that need to be made. In order to get there, we will have to expand our appeal beyond the Democratic Party.
I understand the moral argument behind DHS shutdown. The Trump administration is responsible for the abuses by ICE and the immigration policies. We are responsible for our actions also.

(746 posts)This is not a moral argument, this is politics. Cave and the Democrats lose.

Skyrocketing gas prices, as well as healthcare premiums, and inflation in general, will have far more impact on voters than long lines at TSA in airports.

(130,326 posts)The blizzards and other bad weather that were causing flight delays are also over. The TSA lines will still be longer than usual but not crazy long like they were last week. Let's not cave on this and fund ICE just because of long lines at the airport.

(24,948 posts)but, so far, those are being rejected by Republicans, so.........?
Besides, ICE has all (more than) of the funding it needs for awhile, so, frankly, they can just go to hell.

(9,002 posts)It's the timing of the thing. Israel has wanted our help in taking out Iran for years. Why do we now have this situation where Israel is telling us that they plan to attack Iran, and that we need to help for "defensive" purposes?
You'd almost think that Bibi and Trump planned this.
Of course the law of unintended consequences reared it's ugly head and the whole thing went FUBAR, as these kind of things always seem to do.
I'm just not buying the whole premise of the war. It's especially worrisome since Trump seems to not have a reasonable answer when asked why we're there.

(9,838 posts)61% of Americans have heard, read, or seen information about the current partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Awareness is notably low among independents (52% have seen some or a lot about the shutdown) and passive news consumers (47% have seen some or a lot about the shutdown).
By a 19-point margin, Americans blame Trump and Republicans in Congress (48% blame) for the current shutdown over Democrats in Congress. However, 24% say they blame both groups equally.

(6,754 posts)I think it's merely more of the slow erosion of right wing capital as his grafts become more and more obvious to the public at large. Every passing day, he provides otherwise apathetic voters a compelling reason to vote against his agenda.

(13,940 posts)As has been noted, ICE is already fully funded. It's just dumb to make TSA and other federal workers go without pay or quit...mainly as a gesture, imo, to the people who think they are fighting for the cause as they set it back.

(2,271 posts)Democrats support a stand alone bill. Our senators and congress people need to keep saying that, loudly and ad nauseum. You need to say it too. call your Senators and Reps to make the point.
Caving to Republicans on this wont help a bit but will demoralize the troops.

(13,940 posts)Those of us who focus on politics a lot drift easily into thinking that all that is needed is for "the people to be made aware." To that end, all that is necessary is speaking out, protesting, resisting, fighting, and making a stand. But, imo, we mistake "performance," regardless of how sincere, extreme, or stage-crafted, as "doing something." It almost never does anything.
Some of the troops are too easy to demoralize. Troops who demoralize too easily need to gut check more and ruminate less on social media imo.
