Trump backs Senate government funding deal that includes DHS extension
President Donald Trump on Thursday endorsed a Senate deal to fund the vast majority of the federal government through the remainder of the fiscal year.
Trump's endorsement is likely to significantly ease the passage of a six-bill funding package the Senate is considering with just over a day until a partial government shutdown. Senators clinched a deal shortly before Trump's announcement, agreeing to strip funding for the Department of Homeland Security from the package and pass the other five bills, while DHS will be funded by a stopgap.

(5,060 posts)houses, and the tinpot dictator in the WH would absolutely veto a bill to abolish ICE.
Elections have consequences, and if 2000, 2016, and 2024 didn't emphasis that point, then there is no cure for stupid in the American electorate.
The anticipated number of women coming out to vote in 2024 was less than expected. Yes, the majority of women voted Democratic, but it was a drop in women voter turnout from 2020.
Hispanic voters shifted significantly toward Donald Trump in 2024 compared to 2020, with Trump earning roughly 45%48% of the Latino vote, which was a substantial increase from 2020.
and then there was the protesters who went out of their way to encourage people to NOT vote for VP Harris, but vote third party.
All that added up to where we are today.
2016 was a disaster. We lost every critical swing state by less than 1%, while in those critical swing states Jill Stein received 1% of the vote. If those third party voters, or those that didn't even bother to vote, are that STUPID to realize the differences between VP Harris and trump, they never will. There is no cure for stupidity. As for those protesters who went out of their way to protest and slam VP Harris because of the situation in Gaza, while rarely criticizing trump in comparison, they should be ashamed of themselves because they contributed not only to a trump victory in 2024, but the elimination of a two-state solution.
and those folks who refused to vote for VP Harris, who don't belong to DU, but lurk here, are beneath contempt.

(5,060 posts)There is actually no final deal yet, despite the implication and sarcasm of the OP.
In addition, on this two week extension, OR any final bill, there isn't anything stopping ANY SENATE DEMOCRAT from voting against this extension, or the final bill.
In other words, if enough Democrats want they can still shut the government down, barring that the republicans don't decide to get rid of the filibuster for funding, because the hard reality is that republican still have the majority in both Houses.

(5,060 posts)can vote against it, and accomplish the same thing.
You might also be able to get a few republicans to join that, but I wonder if push comes to shove if there are enough republicans, to get rid of the filibuster.
