A Spectacular Diplomatic Disaster
September 2, 2025 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Paul Krugman: “America has spent decades trying to cultivate good relations with India, which could be a useful counterweight to China. Now we have a nearly complete rupture, with India actually cozying up to China.”

“And what was that about? Apparently Trump, in his bizarre pursuit of a Nobel peace prize, tried to bully Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, into giving him undeserved credit for a cease-fire between India and Pakistan. The two men haven’t talked since.

Axios: Modi joins hands with Xi and Putin in message to Trump.

India 1.46 billion
China 1.4 billion
USA 0.350 billion

The top 3 most populous counties.

We’ve been working towards USA + India = 1.71 vs. China’s 1.4

Today we have China + India = 2.86 vs. USA 0.35

Eventually, that law of large numbers difference is going to irreversibly impact just about every aspect of American life.

But hey…they get to “own the libs” so it’s all good, right?

I don’t want every part of the globe to turn into an overt dictatorship. I have many reasons to fear and distrust this personally.

This creepy argument that “China will do this or that loathsome and undemocratic thing so we should first” appeals to fascists and profiteers everywhere.

And Putin isn’t a good idea either of course but there’s a history there. This is a new development.

How about no dictator and oligarch run herding? Whatever happens to being a citizen of a democracy with enlightenment values or any non-fascistic kind..

I am using the Internet these days strictly for democracy related reasons.
I don’t really enjoy it anymore (not after it became social more than a passive one-sided experience), but while the internet will “democratize things” was cynical bs, it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy to small extents.

I don’t understand transactionalism so I now use the internet (the rare spaces I trust like DU) to leave a digital trail since I at least know that I need women’s rights and democracy to survive though thriving is as far away as it ever was (especially in the last decade and a half).

The US continues to promote divide and rule white supremacy - it is no longer working.
China and India are way smarter than that. Go BRICS. Let the racists destroy themselves.

Which will eventually ruin the free world 🌎

I understand being pissed at *rump and the United States right now but we are still the best chance for a civilized free country

In India people are still born into caste that are for life and china jails people for being born into certain religions

If India is starting to cozy up to China, who by the way are big rivals, then the current US government has no one to blame but itself, particularly Trump.

India is the world leader in the manufacture of generic drugs.

I currently have 2 prescription generic prescriptions in my medicine cabinet with ties to India. I also have some generic OTC's that are probably from India. I just wonder what's going to happen to those drug prices now.

I currently get two different drugs from India via Canada. each drug is a 90 day supply and both cost near $100 each. At my local discount warehouse pharmacy, each drug was near $1,000 each! on my last order, the price went up $90 each due to tariffs. but unfortunately one of the drugs has been stopped at the border, so i don't know when that one will be delivered. MAHA!! HA! HA! HA!
