(23,946 posts)Theyre silly and dont communicate complexity at all. Theyre too informal and childish.

(110,701 posts)They might not find that so acceptable by Millennials, Gen-X, or Boomers.
I'd overlook it if they could write in grammatically coherent paragraphs, spell, meet deadlines, and make appropriate eye contact. I'm not trying to smear an entire generation, but those I have mentored have real issues with all of the above.

(266 posts)Yes, I see them used all the time in, what I consider, the most inappropriate places.
I had a vendor I was working with who used them all the time when we were negotiating a contract.
He didn't seem a Gen Z, but he insisted on using them all the time. I eventually had to ask him to stop because I couldn't understand what his intent was with each emoji and I wasted hours going back and forth seeking clarification. It takes long enough just clarifying language and now I had another level of interpreting the emoji, hours of my life I'll never get back.
There may be a place and time for an emoji in personal chats, but not in business.
Old guy here who still puts two spaces after a period.

But, also, I focus on relational and transformative leadership so my goal is to be less intimidating and more approachable.

(4,815 posts)I.e., mostly yes to comms with colleagues and team members; maybe to managers, depending on the situation; probably not in client relationships or comms to grandmanagers. I appreciate the whimsy and also the range of subtle emotions you can convey with an exquisitely chosen emoji.
