(10,552 posts)Here's some confirmation:
Valley PBS learned late Tuesday night that its transmitter had been destroyed.
"Once we get more of an idea of what they damage is, we'll be able to get a better understanding of what we need to do moving forward," Valley PBS Chief Operating Officer, Robert Mollison said.
Mollison says the station airs a variety of shows on channels 18.1 through 18.4.
"They would all be here." Mollison said while pointing to Valley PBS's tv monitors. "Unfortunately, as you can see, it's dark for the time being."

(1,059 posts)Fresno, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of Central California.
They might still be broadcasting on cable systems, but up here in the redwoods, Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte counties a lot of people are retired and on fixed incomes and can't afford even basic cable with is a substantial monthly bill.

(28,666 posts)The latter is my PBS station in Sac, the rest are more NORCAL than me and are also still broadcasting. Which channels do you know that aren't, so you can c/p them in your OP for accuracy?
obamanut2012
(28,666 posts)We stream it via Roku or phone app, but I checked after I saw your app. Your OP is not 100% accurate.
NorCal Public Media (KRCB and KPJK) are also still over air.

(5,128 posts)Please post your source. Apparently, it is incorrect, according to myself and others. KVIE and KQED are still broadcasting here in my part of Northern CA. We still need to know the souurce for this, though. Thanks.

(1,059 posts)Up here in the redwoods, Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte counties,
Our PBS goes out, it takes with it programming not available on commercial TV:
Cooking shows, Art shows, Travel shows, Documentary shows, Native American shows, Science shows,
News from Outside the US; BBC, Germany, Japan, France!
Not just only ONE POINT of View!
No PBS, then no TV at all.

(45,492 posts)PBS doesn't directly broadcast over the air. They provide programming to PBS-affiliated non-commercial stations.
Which station or stations do you tune into in order to receive PBS programming? You've never said. But lots of posters have indicated that there are PBS-affiliated stations in northern california that are broadcasting.

(19,409 posts)My sister finally got through, and it seems to be a technical problem, the transmitter seems okay, they are talking to the manufacturer.
Mr.Bee
(1,059 posts)then why are they not even broadcasting a signal my channel scan can find?
Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte counties,
if you only have a TV and an antenna, you're outta luck!
If you live in any one of these four northern California counties
you need to call this station and let them know you rely on broadcasting
of shows like Newshour, DemocracyNow, DWNews, BBCnews, for truthful news!
To go off the air for FIVE days is unacceptable, we pay for this whether we donate or not,
and we'd never see a commercial station do this even after a natural disaster!
Good Morning and Welcome to Day Six
of no broadcast, no transmission, no signal.
No PBS, Create, FNX, World.

(45,492 posts)You still haven't identified the call signs of the PBS-affiliated station or stations you say have been dark for six days -- an event that one would expect to be mentioned somewhere else on the Internet, but seemingly hasn't been.

Mr.Bee
(1,059 posts)Discontinued? no longer available or produced? Stopped?
I'm not misleading, They stopped broadcasting Sunday!
I'm asking others who may be watching OVER THE AIR PBS
in those four counties are experiencing the same problem for six days now.
A lot of complaining on this site about this country's news media, and
I find it important to watch news programs from outside the country!
Which PBS offers from BBC, France, Japan and Germany!
onenote
(45,492 posts)Which station or stations are you unable to receive? Because PBS clearly is still providing programming to stations or this would be a nationwide outage.
I did not mislead. I stated clearly in the title: Northern California
Okay, Local PBS Ceased Over The Air Broadcasting In Northern California
which they have for four counties they serve for six days now.
onenote
(45,492 posts)PBS doesn't broadcast over the air. If they were shut down, their programming wouldn't be available to their affiliated stations. So which are the affiliated stations that you normally can receive but now can't?
Here are the four stations that serve the counties you identified:
Mendocino County: KRCB, channel 22, licensed to Cotati
Humboldt County: KEET, channel 13, licensed to Eureka
Trinity County: KIXE, channel 9, licensed to Redding
Del Norte County: KVIE, channel 6 - licensed to Sacramento
It's a simple question: when you want to watch PBS programming over-the-air, which of these stations to you tune into? While I don't know exactly where you live, I'd be surprised if all four have coverage areas that overlap. My guess is that you probably watch KIXE, which has a pretty strong signal that covers over 130 miles and touches all four counties. That being said, if KIXE had been dark for six days, it would have been reported by someone other than just you.
The other possibility is that you get your over-the-air signal from a low-power "translator" station that repeats the primary station's signal. Those low power stations are not supported by the level of resources as a full power station and extended outages are not unknown and because they impact a relatively limited area, don't make the news when they happen.
Mr.Bee
(1,059 posts)the call letters K-E-E-T, people say, "what's that?"
SickOfTheOnePct
(8,183 posts)Says they're having issues and are working on it.
onenote
(45,492 posts)Not PBS generally. Just one station.
The station's website and facebook page both note that they are experiencing outages that impact some viewers. That is a station problem, not a PBS problem. YOUR POST SUGGESTING PBS HAS CEASED BROADCASTING IS MISLEADING. PBS doesn't broadcast. It supplies programming that broadcast its programming. It is still doing so which is why every other station that is a PBS member is broadcasting PBS programming.
But if your goal was to get folks to click on your post, congrats.
Mr.Bee
(1,059 posts)Not to mislead and misinform. It is true that the station used to have a near 100% signal,
and could reach into Mendocino and Trinity counties, but since the UHF-VHF band reorganization,
I'll admit the signal has diminished somewhat.
I apologize for any misunderstanding and was not trying to create 'clickbait'.
While Humboldt County falls within this general area, and you might receive some signal in parts of Del Norte County depending on your specific location and antenna setup, you can get a more precise determination of KEET's OTA signal strength and availability in both Humboldt and Del Norte counties by using the DTV Reception Maps tool provided by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
