Alligator Alcatraz

My family moved from Michigan to Orlando in the summer of 1959. I was going into fifth grade. We didn't have air conditioning until I was a senior in high school. I can't express how ungodly the heat and humidity were in central Florida, not to mention the insects. Putting any human beings in tents in the middle of a south Florida swamp is absolutely cruel and unusual punishment. I only hope a storm like a tornado or hurricane hits there before the detainees arrive. In fact, I'll be praying for it. Homan saying he feels like a kid in a candy store running his department is such a statement of the basest inhumanity. I wish his karma falls hard and soon.

Christ, even Hitler and the Japanese did not publicize how awful their concentration and POW camps were. These are sick fucks.

5. The tents at Gitmo cost $3M and supposedly had AC

They ended up breaking this down mostly. Complete waste of money.

The government spent $3 million alone to construct tent structures, which are still not functional and were never used, CNN reports.

This is definitely cruel and unusual punishment.
I didn’t grow up in Florida but I did grow up on the Virgina peninsula/Tidewater. Brutally hot and humid. We had “Mosquito Man” who drove around in a little F150 with giant liquid tanks in the back spraying for mosquitoes. Somebody would yell MOSQUITO MAN and we’d all run into one oh our houses for about 100 minutes. Thomas Jefferson called Williamsburg “Devil’s burg”. It’s surrounded by marshes. It’s not surprising they barely made in in Jamestown.

I can’t imagine being on a runway in the Everglades.

6. A little bit about where Alligator Alcatraz is

This is a map using Google Maps to show where Alligator Alcatraz is in relation to some of its surroundings.

The concentration camp is about 20 miles west of where the Value Jet flight 592 crashed in 1996. See location markers.
Also on the map, running north and south is a 9 mile section about 2-1/2 miles to the east of the camp. This is actually a series of canals that were man-made canals dug by drag mining for rock to build US 41, The Tamiami Trail, that was completed in 1928. We fished those canals a long time ago. At the northern end of those canals there were enough alligators that we joked that if someone was fast enough, he could run across their backs to reach the other side of the pond. There really were that many. Zooming in reveals a zig-zag in the road, locals call the eastern curve the 40 mile bend, and the western one the 50 mile bend.

ValuJet Flight 592 crash investigation

ValuJet Flight 592 was a tragic aviation disaster that occurred on May 11, 1996, shortly after takeoff from Miami, en route to Atlanta. The flight, carrying 105 passengers and 5 crew members, crashed into the Florida Everglades, resulting in no survivors. The investigation revealed that the fire, likely caused by improperly stored oxygen generators, spread rapidly, leading to the loss of control of the aircraft. This incident highlighted significant deficiencies in both ValuJet's operations and maintenance practices, particularly its subcontractor, SabreTech. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) later criticized the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for not enforcing safety recommendations, which ultimately led to a shift in the FAA's focus from promotion of the industry to prioritizing safety.

There was a severe weather warning stationed right over the Alcatraz site. High winds, hail, thunder lightning and severe rain. Temps around 90. Humidity Round 95%. Happens every day this time of year. No one deserves this treatment.
