(20,559 posts)When it comes to big cities, I want my mayor's to be tough on crime. You steal from Walgreens? You're getting a year. Cought with an illegal gun? You're getting 10.

(2,846 posts)than the ones you cite here---- especially if that person is an ELECTED Republican politician, IMHO...
Those politicians steal from the taxpayers, at every level of government---
and the amount of money represented is much greater
than that represented by someone who steals some baby formula from Walmart...
I am not defending or advocating for petty crimes here,
but the farther we get down this rat-hole,
the closer I get to doing so
When the law is not enforced against criminal, fascist rapist politicians,
but with rigor against a man who steals a bag of dehydrated potatoes to feed his family,
I have much less sympathy for "being tough on crime", particularly "non-violent crime".
I am reminded of the saying,
"In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread."

Mamdanis constituents seem to like him a lot too as they have re-elected him a number of times

(40,758 posts)local public radio (as you know, but others might not). He is so articulate. This is the kind of person we want in office. Smart, measured in his positions, attractive in a mayoral sort of way, even-tempered, knowledgeable, experienced.
I don't know Mamdani that well but if Bernie and AOC back him, I'm on board.

(1,212 posts)...and once you factor in the humidity and general apathy, it's likely turnout isn't going to be great. And while it changed during the Giuliani/Bloomberg years, I think NYC is back to where whichever Democrat wins the primary, they've essentially been elected Mayor.

And Eric Adams will run in the GE as an independent. Cuomo says he may run too--which would likely split the Democratic vote.

(115 posts)that Mamdani has a lead of several points over Cuomo with men. There is a lesson for Dems there...
I also hope he won't make the same mistakes that the west-coast progressives made, in saying it's racist to require 8th-graders to take Algebra I and other nonsense.

(2,497 posts)Put him in. That bloc sees the establishment doing nothing to improve their lives, and they want them out. They want a fresh face and they got it now. He will have a battle with the NYC old guard, and, if the young voters get behind him, he may be able to get some change in..
The Dem establishment better wake up fast - the younger generation is right on their heels and they demand change. If they want to stay in office, the old guard had better make some big changes quick.. But they won't, and I'm good with that. Cuomo needs to go - his time has passed.

I live in Minneapolis, so I don't know much about Mamdani.
But I hope that Mamdani has some creative ideas to fund his campaign promises or he will have a lot of unhappy constituents. Im glad that younger people are stepping up to the plate; I just hope that their enthusiasm is backed up by solid groundwork and realistic expectations.
