VA-GOV: After Virginia elections, governor's race begins a new phase

RICHMOND — Virginia’s election season kicked into high gear Saturday as the newly formed Democratic lineup for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general launched a statewide bus tour on a blistering hot afternoon while their Republican rivals kept to a far more low-key campaign approach.

“Everywhere we travel, people get to hear from us about the things we are for,” gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger said at an afternoon rally at Richmond’s Abner Clay Park with her ticket mates, state Sen. Ghazala F. Hashmi (Richmond) for lieutenant governor, and former Norfolk delegate Jerrauld C. “Jay” Jones for attorney general.

The trio revved up about 100 sweltering fans with promises that ran the gamut from improving schools and lowering housing and health care costs to defending Virginia’s many federal workers against job cuts pursued by President Donald Trump. After the speeches, supporters lined up to sign their names on a campaign bus advertising all three Democratic candidates.

Spanberger’s campaign is scheduled to roll for the next seven days on a 40-stop tour from her home base in the Richmond suburbs to rural Brunswick County on the North Carolina line, up to bustling Northern Virginia and over to the coast in Virginia Beach. The route crosses some bright-red rural areas, but generally sticks to cities or towns that might draw Democratic crowds.
