Trump signed an EO on 2/18/25 to "reign in" independent agencies. The Federal Election Commission in charge of campaign finance laws and the Election Assistance Commission that is in charge of EVMs intrigrity.
As a side the first EVMs came out in 1976. 1998 Trump was being investigated for Russian ties. The Taj Mahal casino broke anti-money laundering rules 106 times. The gamblers who cashed out $10,000 or more in a single day. The settlement was the largest fine the federal government gave a casino for violating the Bank Secrecy Act. They were laundering money using slot machines.

I really liked that man... but he was one of those who could be counted on to be swayed from any opinion or decision by the next "shiny" thing dangling in front of him.

Democrats in general, Democratic leadership, Garland and even Biden seemed frozen by the GOP pivot to "tourists", didn't realize the implications and landscape, and thought sound policies would right the ship of State, IMHO. Not to defend Garland, but did he have that much discretion, power? Biden was leaving the rule of law sacrosanct in the hands of DOJ. It always worked before, even if Nixon inflicted serious wounds. Did any of them anticipate the subsequent assault on the Judiciary in Toddler 2? Or that SCOTUS would tilt so severely? Don't forget the lies that seated the majority. Not to make this all sound like excuses. It's tragic, it's incompetent, it's expected. We've been blindsided by it all, which doesn't attest to strategic planning and competency. That's my take on it.

What we Democrats have seen since Reagan, while it was happening -- and what our party tried but failed to stop during the Obama and Biden years, just ask Bernie -- has now happened:
Dark Money. And with it, the takeover of the tech and Koch oligarchy and their corporate henchmen;
the takeover of the SCOTUS and half the House of Congress; all of the current cabinet and the White House.
You might feel blindsided now, but we all on DU yelled about it in real time. You know we did -- we all know this -- and so you can't be properly representing political and economic history.
Our party isn't a "both sides do it" party. Democrats are a "rule of law" party. Democrats are not in denial.
1. We Democrats take dark money grudgingly from pro-democracy oligarchs (yes, Kamala had their backing), but the main, foundational source of our money -- unlike Republican money -- is from unions of the working class.
2. There's another important difference: We Democrats put our crooks in jail, whether it's Illinois Democratic governors or speakers of the House, or congressmen like Menendez. (I've probably forgotten a couple)

(12,538 posts)There does not seem to be any imminent threat to deal with and all the leaders are able to use secure phone lines and my bet is there is also a SCIF available.
I keep wondering if his handlers needed to bring him back because being around the same leaders for more than a day, his behaviour would be more noticeable and scrutinized by the leaders. I also thought that some may be afraid of him staying there and being influenced by the leaders and that he would reverse some of his positions. Best to get him out of town before meeting with leaders of Ukraine and Mexico.
Or maybe he didn't like the food and nobody gave him 2 scoops with his chocolate cake.

Goods to and from Europe and Asia are up and they are now talking about increasing the capacity at the port in Montreal.

Far from being able to fulfil his duties, his Cabinet believe in lock-step that the things you listed ARE his duties. Why would they invoke the 25th?
Even most Republicans that disagree with much of what he does do not call it insanity or cognitive decline--nor do they call for his ouster. And they seem to be able to translate the things we hear as totally incomprehensible into something that makes sense--to them at least.
My fear is that we are running into a metaphorical silo that will allow them to use a "bunker busting" bomb on our way of thinking. We must be smart, measured, persistent, and persuasive to lead the country in another direction. We must consider him and his followers as competent adversaries to be countered at every turn--not as a circus of inept clowns that came into town with the local fair. For all the talk of mental shortcomings, the MAGA movement has been a successful one--like it or not. We must somehow counter with a movement of our own that brings more Americans into our way of thinking about the world.

But the cabinet members want to keep their own jobs and power, and Vance could fire them and replace them with his own people, which he's likely to do considering that right now he doesn't have his own base. With Trump gone there will be a huge power struggle, and Vance has all the charisma of a garden slug, so he'll want a cabinet of tech bros, not Trump's incompetent MAGA retreads. Vance is a creep but he's smart enough to know that he can't run a government with the current pack of idiots who probably don't like him already because nobody does. Unless Trump is actually in a coma and it gets too difficult to keep doing the Weekend at Bernie's thing with him, I don't expect any action on the 25th.

(4,046 posts)As long as Congressional Republicans refuse to remember they're a part of a coequal branch of government, I just don't see how Trump's cabinet of flunkies will invoke the Twenty-fifth Amendment because of whatever cognitive issues we see in the president. The entire GOP and its media ecosystem are all in on the corruption and rot to bring down the federal, state, and local governments that serve the people and replace them with fascist kakistocracies. They'll keep propping up King Covfefe, no matter what we think.
Which brings me to this point: I don't want the president's defense team pleading insanity when Trump and everyone around him knew exactly who they wanted to hurt, exactly how they were going to grift, and exactly why they were going to wreck this country to serve their own ends. I want an example made of this regime for all the harm it's caused and could still cause, not a hung jury or an acquittal resulting from Alina Habba's Grandpa Crazypants Defense.

All of these outrageous acts - renaming naval vessels, revising history, firing archivists, removing Dem appointees from SEC and other committees, firing large numbers of badly needed scientists and other experts, and all the rest - aren't coming from his fertile mind. This is coming from the Project 2025 playbook created by Nazi committees over the last few years. And Project Esther - another Heritage Foundation project whose stated aim is to combat antisemitism, but which is really just an initiative to quash and punish all dissent of Israeli policy and punish those who even dare to discuss any aspect of Israel that isn't flattering - is coming next.
Invoking the 25th will do nothing to stop the re-engineering of America into a Nazi state. It would be a nice thing to happen, only because it would crush the Orange Asshole's ® ego. But, nothing short of a modern day de-Nazification of the federal government will fix this. In the next election, we must vote in high enough numbers to overcome the voter suppression program being put in place by Republicans right now.

(306 posts)It’s not that they don’t notice or care. It just isn’t true. If people choose to only consume news that’s fits/confirms their own personal bias, that’s what they will see. From what I’ve observed, it isn’t any type of abnormal decline. The guy has no filter. Which in my opinion, is terribly unbecoming. But non the less, if you can stomach it, and listen to an entire press conference, etc. he’s actually very coherent. I am not the type that is going to let fiction get in the way of facts Just because I can’t stand the guy, is he a national embarrassment? Absolutely, that is a given.

We had a Democratic congress for two of the four years of Biden's administration, but no one interested in taking some risk, or making some bold moves to use the power they had to stop Trump. The biggest obstacle is the Supreme Court. So if this was such a high priority for them, take the risk that would be required to pack the court and that gets us Trump's trials for insurrection and stealing documents on a fast track, saves Roe, overturns Citizens United and the Immunity rulings, and leaves the GOP figuring out who to run in 2024.

(10,927 posts)Section 4 of the Amendment is virtually useless to remove a President who has not been rendered physically incapable of contesting its use. It is not simply a matter of the VP and a majority of the principals of the executive departments saying the President is unable to discharge his duties.
That is merely the starting point.
If the President says he is capable, it eventually goes to Congress where BOTH houses would have to render a 2/3rds vote in favor of removal. In four tries at impeachment the Senate alone has never reached the requisite 2/3rds vote. It’s nonsensical that both houses would do so, even if Trump was demonstrably barking mad to everyone. The MAGAts still wouldn’t vote against him.
