That may sound like hyperbole but consider that the appeals court will rule on whether or not a President has the authority to send in the National Guard and the military, in opposition to the Posse Comitatus Act that was passed after the Civil War.
We cannot assume they will follow the Constitution or the precedence of current law. They are unpredictable.
And if it is appealed to the Supreme Court, will they rule against Donald Trump? You would not want to bet the farm on those stable geniuses.
If the Courts do give Trump control of the military, don't you think he would use it?
There would be war in the streets.
That is why these upcoming court decisions are so important.

(2,287 posts)I am no longer fussed about it. I have accepted the inevitability that we will have a fascist autocracy, and by some measures weve already passed that line. The only remaining g question is when that open conflict will begin, and whether well have a midterm election thats capable of changing things just enough to stave off the untimely deaths of many people not counting any political violence.
I hope everyone is organizing themselves and people they care about, not playing the wait-and-see game. Its going to get a lot worse.

(10,589 posts)The first thing will be IEDs and geurilla attacks on ICE, Guardsmen and isolated active duty units in urban centers...
There is no chance of divisions of the armed forces facing off against each other in our cities...but there is a 100% chance that if the consent of the governed is removed that the security of the enforcers will be the first casulty in the second American Civil War.
The troops - we have been used to near-universal support and adulation (bordering on fetishization and cult-like worship in some regions) since the mid-80's, after the protests and actions in the Vietnam era and its aftemath will be the first to feel the change and the impact of real warfare in America again.
Targetted assassinations like we saw in MN over the weekend will force all government officials to either resign or go into bunker-like lock down against the near constant threat of being shot or kidnapped. Troops on patrol will be victimized by IEDs and sniper fire. The insurrection will not be quelled or conquered and if the goal is to make urban areas into American Gaza Strips, that will be realized as well. Thousands of innocents will die. Generational grudes and vendettas will be created. America will cease to be a place that can be governed because the Rule of Law (that currently provides that thin veneer of civilization and order) will be meaningless.
When the law is not applicable to all, it is enforcible on none. Anarchy and violence will be the norm and the police and uniformed (ESPECIALLY the masked ones) will be targeted first and frequently. If people think stress and suicides are high NOW in military deployments, just wait until the act of attempting to drive into the camp requires a salomn run where every intersection, every exit ramp, every traffic light becomes a possible IED detonation.
People in America are asleep at the wheel and have no idea what deprivation and desperation look like in a nation with as many guns as people and MORE ammo. Hell on Earth may be Gaza today. If this nation loses the Rule of Law, it will quickly become #1 with a literal bullet.

(1,345 posts)I'm no Trump apologist, but this distinction has to be clear so that people don't get confused. Eisenhower and LBJ federalized local State guards and the courts have upheld their actions.
