Overall, four in five (79%) SNAP households included either a child, an elderly individual, or a nonelderly individual with a disability. Of those not working, most are disabled, over 65, or caring for others.

Working participants: Nearly half of all Americans who rely on SNAP are working, often in low-paying jobs that do not provide enough income to live on.

In fiscal year (FY) 2023 data:
39% of SNAP participants were children.
20% were elderly (age 60+).
10% were nonelderly individuals with a disability.
7% were full-time caregivers.
