A Halloween story for us all. 👻

So this was ‘93. I’d just gotten out of the Army and had a townhouse apartment in Denbigh (Newport News).

I’d gotten home from the lumber yard and had bought a lot of candy. I love Halloween. I turn on the light and they start coming at 5:30. I’m handing out fistfuls of candy. 45 minutes maybe an hour I’m out. Turn off the light.

My best friend and my roommate (they worked together) get there. We’re going out that night dressed up as pretty much the same clothes we always wear. Some band was playing.

I go upstairs to take a shower. I get out of the shower to hear much tumult downstairs.

Me (down the stairs) - What the hell is going on down there?
United voice - THEY WON’T STOP!!
Me - turn off the damn light.
United - IT’s OFF!!!

I guess word had gotten around about the fistfuls of candy. My VW Beetle was easy to point to I’m sure.

These knuckleheads were running around finding things to hand out. Two bachelors’ party house formerly lived in by employees of a Dunkin Donuts. They were handing out anything they could find in the kitchen drawers - pennies, ketchup mustard packets, salt and pepper packets,…….books of matches.

Me (when I got downstairs) You can’t give kids books of matches!

United THEY JUST KEPT COMING!!

I’m surprised I didn’t have a few parents knocking on the door.

So I candy-up expecting another 50-75 more candy hunters.

As I write this 2.5 hours into trick-or-treaters time, only 1 small costume has come to the house.

Living only 7 miles from the Mexican border, I'm blaming ICEstapo.

We did start getting anyone here until 7:30 or 8:00 but nothing near like we used to have at our former house. They came in in minivans. It looked like Vietnam soldiers jumping out of helicopters.

it's that Mierda47 and his ICEstapo, have changed this country for the worst.

Now, I'm hearing a rumor that Mierda47 had a big ball last night. Who's going to pay for that, if it did happen?
I'm betting they are using the emergency SNAP funding so they can claim, it doesn't exist.

I’d think, from the size of the apartment complex, some were return visits.

I never heard anything about the packs of matches.
